Lumbers weighs city exit over retail challenges

Lumbers, a Leicester-based jewellery retailer with over 140 years of history, is considering relocating from the city centre to Fosse Park, an out-of-town shopping centre. Managing director Dominic Gomersall cited concerns over anti-social behavior and the need for improved car access as key reasons for the potential move.

Fosse Park has recently been granted permission to subdivide retail units, a move aimed at creating a high street-like shopping environment. The site, which offers 3,100 free parking spaces, houses major retailers such as Next, Marks & Spencer, Nike, and Boots. Leicester City Council had objected to the changes, warning they could draw further trade away from the city centre.

City officials, including Andrew Smith, Leicester’s director of planning, transportation, and economic development, acknowledged the retail challenges but highlighted ongoing efforts to improve the city. Mayor Sir Peter Soulsby has also proposed a Public Spaces Protection Order (PSPO) to address anti-social behavior, which could take effect from April 1.

Lumbers, originally established in Loseby Lane in 1881, has moved several times, most recently relocating to High Street in 2015. Gomersall, the third generation to lead the business, said the decision to move would ultimately depend on the next generation’s vision for the company.
