Ensure that your profile stays up to date, encompassing all relevant experience, interests, education, and qualifications. This practice can foster new career prospects and propel career advancement. Creating an online network can be equally valuable as establishing one in real life, affording opportunities for professional growth and expansion. Social media and professional networking platforms are frequently employed by professionals to cultivate their networks. If you have a long-standing social media presence, you may already possess contacts in your network with whom you can form more profound connections. Initiating your networking endeavours online can also open doors to a much larger pool of individuals in diverse locations, enabling you to connect with people who may be otherwise unapproachable in person. For instance, you can leverage social media to re- establish contact with former classmates who may be operating in your industry. The wider pool of contacts is especially important when you consider that the best networking should be done based on the quality, rather than the quantity, of the people you connect with. This means seeking out individuals who have the ability to make a difference, often through mentorship. When seeking out a mentor, ensure you thoroughly research them, and explain why helping you would be beneficial to them. This knowledge can help you identify ways to add value to their professional life, leading to higher quality connections. This could be your unique perspective on their line of work or assured future loyalty. Ultimately, networking should be approached in a similar way to making new friends. Lasting relationships require compatible personalities and a give and take attitude, so putting your best foot forward is paramount. Whilst personal topics would not generally be appropriate within the first 4-5 meetings, letting your personality shine through allows your contacts to understand your unique assets and feel invested in seeing them develop. The best way to achieve this is to combine a well-rounded sense of humour with a genuine passion for your industry. Keep on top of developments within your field and share your opinions on them. This way, you don’t have to awkwardly pitch your greatness to contacts, they’ll be able to see it for themselves. © stock.adobe.com/Monkey BusinessFEATURES Print & Packaging Spotlight Business Services Supply Chain Management Environmental and Waste Management Accountants Review REGULARS Commercial Property Motoring Corporate Hospitality Watch out too for the latest news from across the region in every sector Next month in August 2024 - Deadline 17th July Visit us at www.eastmidlandsbusinesslink.co.uk where you’ll find the latest news as it breaks – and why not subscribe to our newsletters so you can have the latest news emailed to your inbox East Midlands Business Link www.eastmidlandsbusinesslink.co.uk at the Construction and Property Summit 2024. Companies want to focus on not just baselining their carbon footprints but also being able to take meaningful action towards Net Zero. As requirements to report to standards before making pledges and commitments gain momentum it is no longer acceptable to just state a company is attempting to be Net Zero by a certain date, it needs to be substantiated. This webinar will explore what science-based targets are, how they work and what are the short and long- term goals that need to be met in order to make an accepted pledge to Net Zero. And finally The world of Frazer Brain-tracking Should employers be able to track your brain data? This is one of the questions researchers from the University of Nottingham will be asking visitors at this year’s Royal Society Summer Science Exhibition, as they explore wearable consumer brain scanners. The team are demonstrating different types of wearable brain scanning devices and gathering people’s opinions on how they feel about using this new type of consumer neurotechnology. While there are obvious ethical concerns, there is also an opportunity for this technology to help us do our jobs or remind us when we need breaks - something Frazer requires! Max Wilson, associate professor of human- computer interaction at the University of Nottingham, said: “Personal brain scanners are already on the market and whilst they are still in their infancy compared to smartwatches early adopters are already starting to use them. Our research studies how people will use these devices to improve their lives, as well as exploring the emerging ethical concerns, data privacy, and social implications of the imminent future of living with these personal brain scanners.” With personal brain scanners now at the point smart watches were in the year 2000, the path forward will certainly be interesting. Mandatory montage Last month, Frazer read a bizarre and rather gloomy article concerning how businesses are helping manage the stress of call centre staff. Though of course companies showing support for mental health initiatives should be lauded, one bank is offering an interesting system. To help keep employees relaxed on their shifts, an AI model monitors workers to identify when they are close to their breaking point and runs a calming montage of personal photos set to music. While it would be easy to make fun of the tech for how bleak it seems, trials have indicated it does in fact reduce burnout! Fortunately, staff get to choose their own photos and songs. © stock.adobe.com/Matthew Cerff/peopleimages.com © stock.adobe.com/ViDi Studio Stress bragging Do you feel as though your colleagues don’t like you? Well, it may be because of ‘stress bragging’. Feeling stressed is a common experience, and one that can have significant consequences for well-being. However, some employees are actively bragging about it to others at work, wearing stress as a badge of honour. New research shows that stress bragging has resoundingly negative implications for braggarts as they are considered to be less competent and less likeable by co-workers. Co-workers are also less likely to help the complainer. So, if you’re a stress bragger, Frazer suggests it might be time for a behaviour change! “This is a behaviour we’ve all seen, and we all might be guilty of at some point,” said Jessica Rodell, lead author of the study and a professor of management in University of Georgia’s Terry College of Business. “When I was wondering about why people do this, I thought maybe we are talking about our stress because we want to prove we’re good enough. We found out that often backfires.” © stock.adobe.com/sudowoodo 54 East Midlands Business Link www.eastmidlandsbusinesslink.co.uk NTERN NATION AL Fut pro Fut ture fi g coding bility ce g Labelling, c and traaceab Food scienc Environmen spotlight ntal agingkc aa P rld o our guide to the pharmaceutical wY Issue 4 1olume 1 V mpeeee T profitable Sustainable, ature er bl a Unyielding i contro em l ll a Handlingth handli M net www .pbiforum.ne SEPTEMBER 2023 EAST MIDLANDS LEA £3.50 EADING BUSINESS MAGA AZINE een going gr WW The business case eo DMS Comms, Collab WW the barriers Organisatio bs and ANDSBUSINE rstoexceence ning - onal lear ESSLNKCOU w UK .co.uk www EMPOWER Your Business T OCTOB £2.95 BER2023 BreastC Hair & B Cce Bty WithLou In Love Month Awaren B th BLM GROUP www.blmgroup.co.uk Heritage Lincolns hi WWW.LINCWWW.LINC OLNSHIRETOOLNSHIRETO ODAYNEODAYNE september 2023 yorkshire & lincolnsh £3.50 shire’s leading business ma magazine VOLUME38SSUE09 .blmgroup.co.ukwww organ c Over Automation driving adaption success Driving business ning isational lear comngbaeso V w Often Imitated - Never Equalled www.blmgroup.co.ukEast Midlands Business Link Bricks 2024 A celebration of those helping to create the landscape for the next generation EAST MIDLANDS The prestigious East Midlands Bricks Awards are back for 2024!
