< Previous East Midlands Business Link www.eastmidlandsbusinesslink.co.uk COMMERCIAL PROPERTY in new technology and machinery. Markham Vale, a joint venture partnership between property developer HBD and Derbyshire County Council, is a 200-acre industrial and logistics scheme in Chesterfield. The new building forms part of Gould Alloys’ sustainability strategy, while providing additional space to deliver new contracts in the future. The deal also demonstrates the continued demand for space at Markham Vale, with MV55 immediately let with no void period. Tom Wheldon, head of region at HBD, said: “It’s great to see Gould Alloys expanding further at Markham Vale. MV55 is the ideal location for the business’s second base at the scheme; a best-in-class building, its sustainable features will support the company’s environmental strategy and help to minimise its carbon output.” Moreover, in Northamptonshire, The Wigley Group has sold an industrial unit — Unit 1-7 Crick Industrial Estate, Eldon Way — to a London-based real estate investment firm for £3.2m. The owner and manager of business and commercial property across the Midlands initially purchased the site with vacant possession in 2017, for £1.8m, and has carried out a series of improvement works at the premises since, most recently equipping the site with a new kitchenette, new offices, refurbished toilets, and carrying out extensive maintenance works for logistics specialist Nu Vision Logistics, who have just moved in on a 10-year lease. Set within a three-acre site, the 42,000 sq ft unit is located in the heart of the UK’s distribution network adjacent to J18 of the M1 at Crick. James Davies, Chief Executive Officer at The Wigley Group, said: “During the six years this unit has been part of our portfolio, we have carried out a series of improvement works, driven rental value, and secured a new tenant who sees their long-term future of the business at Crick Industrial Estate.” While deals are being done at existing sites, new developments are on the way too. Construction work, for example, is well advanced on Nottingham 360, a 361,000 sq ft warehousing and distribution scheme five minutes from Junction 26 of the M1 motorway that is moving towards practical completion in December. The 16-acre site on Firth Way, Bulwell, was acquired by Premcor Estates and Barwood Capital’s Regional Property Growth Fund IV in August 2021. Nottingham 360 will be a high-bay logistics/production facility with a warehouse on the ground floor of 328,759 sq ft and additional office space Chancerygate has sold Boundary43www.eastmidlandsbusinesslink.co.uk East Midlands Business Link COMMERCIAL PROPERTY of 32,874 sq ft which includes a hub office to the service yard. ESG credentials form a key focus for the building design, which will deliver a BREEAM Excellent rating as well as Net Zero in construction. Director of Premcor Estates, Rob Lane, said: “Nottingham 360 will be a best-in-class logistics scheme, which we are delighted to be bringing forward with Barwood Capital at a time when there is still robust demand for sustainable, well-located buildings. The construction is progressing extremely well with Winvic Construction and we have developed a solid relationship with the Winvic team who are doing a fantastic job.” Furthermore, construction is now underway at Beauchamp Business Park, a new commercial development in Kibworth, Leicestershire. The scheme, being brought forward by Clowes Developments and its team including IMA Architects, TanRo, Millward Consulting Engineers, Gateley Legal and Postins Project Services, will feature a series of freehold and leasehold industrial units ranging from 1,270 sq ft to 10,085 sq ft. Completion is expected in the summer of 2024. James Richards, director at Clowes Developments, says: “The demand for these units has been exceptional which shows the importance of putting the infrastructure in place to support growing local businesses. The majority of interested parties are all local businesses which is fantastic to see, and we are sure that Beauchamp Business Park will develop into a thriving commercial hub, creating employment opportunities for Kibworth and the surrounding areas.” At an earlier stage of development, more industrial/warehouse space is set for Derbyshire now that the former BAS Castings site on Brookhill Road, Pinxton has been acquired by George Dutton Trading Limited. The 2.84 acre site consists of a former foundry works with 45,000 sq ft of dilapidated buildings suitable for redevelopment. George Dutton recently started demolition works and within a couple of months the site will be cleared to make way for an industrial/warehouse scheme under the name of Foundry Business Park. The units will be available on a build to suit basis, and available to purchase, ranging in size from 3,500 sq ft to 40,000 sq ft. These deals and schemes represent just a handful of those taking place across the East Midlands as the region remains an important destination for industrial and logistics property. Nottingham 360 East Midlands Business Link www.eastmidlandsbusinesslink.co.uk THE EAST MIDLANDS BRICKS AWARDS P roperty and construction professionals from across the region gathered on Thursday 28 September at the famous Trent Bridge Cricket Ground for Business Link Magazine’s annual East Midlands Bricks Awards. Recognising and celebrating those behind the changing landscape of our region, rewarding the very best companies, teams and individuals, the event offered the perfect opportunity to showcase the outstanding work carried out across the East Midlands over the past year and network with many of the region’s industry leaders over nibbles and complementary drinks sponsored by Nicholas Associates. A spokesperson for Nicholas Associates said: “In the face of a challenging trading climate, it is of utmost importance to celebrate the successes of the construction industry. We would like to express our gratitude to East Midlands Business Link for organising the 2023 Bricks Awards and extend our appreciation to fellow sponsors for their invaluable contributions. Additionally, we’d like to commend the nominees, finalists, and winners for their dedication, as it is their hard work that ensures the continuous growth of the built environment sector in the East Midlands. Nicholas Associates takes great pride in sponsoring this fantastic event and looks forward to celebrating at the next Bricks Awards in 2024.” Attendees heard from Matt Wallace, Director of Estates and Building Services at Leicester City Council, who kicked off the event with the keynote speech, noting the importance of the night in recognising the businesses and individuals that have helped to make the East Midlands the powerhouse for development and growth that we all know. The first award of the evening was ‘Contractor of the Year’, sponsored by RammSanderson, who’s director Oliver Ramm said: “We thought all the candidates this year were incredibly strong, and showed a keen interest in social value, staff well-being and outstanding efforts in reducing carbon footprint. Being an environmental consultant we found that important as something to pull out and not just in the contracts they are pulling off. The winner epitomised this.” Honourable mentions for the category included Cawarden and EE Smith Contracts. The ultimate winner however was revealed as Bowmer + Kirkland. Christian Parnell, regional director, Bowmer + Kirkland, said: “It is a real honour to win this award as we were nominated by a third party. Bowmer + Kirkland is celebrating our first one hundred years this year and as our company was started in the East Midlands and we still have our head office here, it is nice to win something on our home patch. This achievement is certainly testament to the Winners revealed: The East Midlands Bricks Awards 2023 With the East Midlands Bricks Awards complete for another year, it is time to reflect on the glittering event and reveal the winners. www.eastmidlandsbusinesslink.co.uk East Midlands Business Link THE EAST MIDLANDS BRICKS AWARDS hard work and dedication of our staff.” The ‘Deal of the Year’ award, sponsored by Mather Jamie, followed, for which the finalists were Bassi Group Nottingham Ltd (job saving Pizza Hut takeover) and Rigby & Co (Aida Factory deal). Ultimately Rushton Hickman Limited won the award for their Branston Locks deal. Graham Bancroft, director at Rushton Hickman, said: “We are thrilled to have won this award at the prestigious Bricks Awards, especially as we were up against such outstanding competition, it means the world to us. The deal to Werner had many challenges during the time of the pandemic and escalating build costs, but all parties’ commitment and determination to get an agreement in place was exceptional and the building that our client, Nurton Developments, produced for Werner was fantastic so credit goes to all parties. I am hugely proud of the whole Rushton Hickman team for winning this award.” Robert Cole, Managing Director at Mather Jamie, said: “The competition in this category was high and I was glad we had set some clear criteria before reading the submissions to help us evaluate each entry on merit. Awarding this to a competitor may seem strange, but honesty and trust are values we strongly uphold within our culture at Mather Jamie and this deal was clearly the winner owing its significant impact on the local economy and employment.” The third award of the night was ‘Residential Development of the Year’, sponsored by Sterling Commercial Finance. Runners up were Elms Developments (Elms Phase Two Ltd), and St James Securities and Grainger (The Condor, Derby). The winner of the category was Phoenix Brickwork UK Ltd, for Lincoln’s St Marks student accommodation. Jamie Duerden, brickwork Managing Director at Phoenix Brickwork UK Ltd, said: “This was such a great project and a credit to the whole team that was involved, from us, from the main contractor Bowmer + Kirkland, to the architects.” Next up was the ‘Sustainable Development of the Year’ award, sponsored by Viridis Building Services. Lee Marshall, MD, Viridis Building Services, said on the night: “Very much an eclectic mix in the competition this year for Sustainable Development of the Year, very difficult to judge, but if we break down sustainability into three things - economic, social, and environmental aspects - then it gives us a barometer to judge.” Runners up were Henry Brothers Construction (SportPark Contractor of the Year - Oliver Ramm, RammSanderson, Christian Parnell, Bowmer & Kirkland, and Jon Moore, Bowmer & Kirkland Residential Development of the Year - Jamie Duerden, Phoenix Brickwork UK Ltd, and Nic Rotton, Sterling Commercial Finance Sustainable Development of the Year - Justin Sheldon, HBD, and Lee Marshall, Viridis Excellence in Design - Clayton Penny, Chevin Homes, William Crooks, Cawarden, and Dan Stack, Chevin Homes Deal of the Year - Graham Bancroft, Rushton Hickman Limited, and Robert Cole, Mather Jamie 24 Á East Midlands Business Link www.eastmidlandsbusinesslink.co.uk THE EAST MIDLANDS BRICKS AWARDS Pavilion 4, Loughborough) and Elms Developments (Elms Phase Two Ltd). The winner of the category, however, was HBD for Power Park, Nottingham. Justin Sheldon, director and head of region, HBD, said: “If you don’t know the project it was the old Imperial Tobacco factory where we recycled well over 90% of the material from the demolition - it was 1m sq ft so we had quite a lot of material to work with. I started on the project in 2016 and we completed April this year, so it’s great to get this.” ‘Excellence in Design’, sponsored by Cawarden, followed. Chevin Homes scooped the award, for Amber Farm, beating out stiff competition from Marchini Curran Associates (Phoenix cinema and art centre) and Trident Construction Services (Lark Hill Retirement Village refurbishment). Dan Stack, director, Chevin Homes, said: “All at Chevin Homes are delighted to have won the Excellence in Design award for our Amber Farm development in Oakerthorpe. It is an event that we thoroughly enjoy as we get chance to catch up with contacts from across the East Midlands.” William Crooks, Cawarden’s Managing Director, said: “The winner is something that is quite close to home for me. It’s in the rural area, and it’s important that we continue to look to develop the rural areas - we need housing there as well, it’s not just the cities, we need individual things that stick out. But also when we do that, we need to look back into the past but bring the housing into the modern future. This project fitted all those aspects, and was brilliant because it aided the environment, which is close to our hearts.” The next award was ‘Most Active Estate Agent’, sponsored by OMS. The runners up for this award included BB&J Commercial and Mather Jamie. It was FHP, however, that stole the award. Joel Pennington, training operations manager at OMS, said: “We picked the winner based off numerous factors, but they really stood out for the number of deals that they had managed to close.” Amy Howard, surveyor at FHP, said: “It’s certainly a more difficult market we are facing now so it’s great to continue the activeness in Nottingham, Leicester and East Midlands and continue to push take-up.” The ‘Developer of the Year’ category followed, sponsored by Ward. While Chevin Homes and Brackley Property Developments were honourable mentions, the award went to Clowes Developments. Thomas Clowes, Managing Director at Clowes Developments (UK) Ltd, said: “We are incredibly grateful to be acknowledged for our achievements within the property sector. Winning this award is only made possible by the commitment from our team at Clowes and our expert advisors, consultants, contractors and design teams who support us to deliver a diverse scope of projects across our portfolio. Thank you very much for the recognition and awarding us Developer of the year.” Heather Foo, head of sales (waste) at Ward, said: “We’ve sponsored this category for a number of years now. It’s really important to us. It was extremely difficult, the standards were really high, but we picked this company because of their variety in projects, sustainability considerations, and also their working in partnership.” Next was the ‘Commercial Development of the Year’ award, sponsored by MKM. HBD (Power Park, Nottingham) and Bolsterstone Group Plc and Chesterfield Most Active Estate Agent - Ellis Cullen, FHP, Amy Howard, FHP, Ketlin Maeorg, FHP, and Joel Pennington, OMS Developer of the Year - Gillian Minogue, Clowes Developments, Kate Henderson, Clowes Developments, and Heather Foo, Ward Responsible Business of the Year - Greg Simpson, Press for Attention PR, Emma Attwood, Cawarden, and William Crooks, Cawarden Overall Winner - Clayton Penny, Chevin Homes, Robin Lee, Streets Chartered Accountants, and Dan Stack, Chevin Homes www.eastmidlandsbusinesslink.co.uk East Midlands Business Link THE EAST MIDLANDS BRICKS AWARDS Borough Council (One Waterside Place, Chesterfield) were named runners up for the category, which was ultimately won by Henry Brothers Construction for SportPark Pavilion 4, Loughborough. Clare Swaine, business development manager, Henry Brothers, said: “I was delighted to collect this award on behalf of Henry Brothers, it was a fantastic team effort to deliver this impressive Passivhaus building which is supportive of Loughborough University’s path to net-zero and is a tremendous asset to the University and wider Leicestershire economy. The event was also a great networking opportunity and it was interesting to hear more about the various developments happening in the region.” MKM added: “MKM were proud to sponsor the Commercial Development of the Year category at the East Midlands Bricks Awards 2023. The event provided an ideal opportunity to celebrate the construction industry’s achievements and highlight local development, as well as connect with leading companies from across the region. East Midlands Business Link did a great job with the awards, shining a light on the area and bringing businesses together. Congratulations to all the winners, including the winner of our sponsored category, Commercial Development of the Year, Henry Brothers’ SportPark Pavilion 4 - Loughborough University’s first Passivhaus development on campus and one of only a handful of certified Passivhaus Classic office buildings in the UK. The £9m scheme will directly support 165 jobs with an additional 157 induced jobs in the wider economy.” The ‘Architects of the Year’ award, sponsored by Blueprint Interiors, followed. Finalists for the category included IMA Architects and Influence Landscape Planning and Design. The winner of the award, however, was Matthew Montague Architects. Louise Jones, practice manager, Matthew Montague Architects, said: “We are delighted to win the Architects of the Year Award. 2023 is our 25th year in business and we are thrilled to receive this award in our milestone year. The event was well organised, well attended and thoroughly enjoyable.” Ben Dawson, business development manager at Blueprint Interiors, said: “This was my first time attending these awards and I was very impressed with the calibre of award finalists and being able to network with so many other industry professionals. I was delighted to be able to present an award to Matthew Montague in recognition of their 25th anniversary and their involvement with many flagship Derby and Derbyshire developments.” The penultimate award of the evening was the ‘Responsible Business’ award, sponsored by Press for Attention PR. Finalists for the category were G F Tomlinson and Aspbury Planning Limited with the winner named as Cawarden. William Crooks, Managing Director of Cawarden, said: “Cawarden’s second consecutive win of the Responsible Business of the Year award is a true testament to our unwavering commitment towards improving the industry’s image. Our efforts to raise the bar for our people, planet, and community have been recognised through this award. We are grateful to Greg Simpson from Press for Attention PR for choosing Cawarden as the winner and would like to extend our congratulations to all the winners and finalists of the awards ceremony, including Chevin Homes, who won our Excellence in Design sponsored category award for their stunning Amber Farm development, and Bowmer + Kirkland, our long-standing client who was awarded the Contractor of the Year title. Being a part of the regional property and construction sector is a source of immense pride for us, and we will continue to strive towards excellence.” Ahead of presenting the award, Greg Simpson, founder of Press for Attention PR, said: “Before I joined the dark side of the force and began a career in PR, I was a business journalist, which means I do take an unhealthy interest in award submissions, and I do go in them with a bit of rigour.” He noted that the nominations from all the finalists were very well thought through and put together, and that he researched every single claim made to ensure they were provable. He added that the finalists were “not paying lip service,” but putting responsibility into their businesses properly - “I congratulate you on that,” he said. The final award of the evening, sponsored by Streets Chartered Accountants, was ‘Overall Winner’, which was scooped by Chevin Homes. “We were honoured to be named as the Overall Winner from a high class field of nominated companies,” said Dan Stack, director, Chevin Homes. James Pinchbeck, marketing partner, Streets Chartered Accountants, added: “Streets Chartered Accountants were delighted and proud to sponsor the Bricks 2023, the awards serving to highlight the vibrancy of the construction and property sector across the East Midlands. They are also a great showcase for the many businesses and organisations that have undertaken innovative and pioneering projects over the last few years. With Streets’ tax specialism for looking after those in the sector we were delighted to be sponsor of the Overall Winner with the award being presented on the night to Chevin Homes by Robin Lee, one of a number of partners across our practice who specialise in the property and construction sector.” The event closed with congratulations, and time for networking. Now that the Bricks is over for 2023, make sure to look out for information on the 2024 event.
