And finally The world of Frazer 54 East Midlands Business Link www.eastmidlandsbusinesslink.co.uk Time to sack Secret Santa? As Christmas parties come around and workplaces get in the festive swing, so does Secret Santa. While it can be a fun tradition, it can sometimes dip its toe in controversial waters, with inappropriate presents purchased for colleagues, or something just plain boring that will never be used. Coming across Frazer’s desk last month was research from UK Money Bloggers (part of the Smart Money People Group), showing that although a third of employees will participate in workplace Secret Santa this year, 30% would prefer not to, and of those who will take part, 36% anticipate giving away the gift they receive, leading to £60m+ in wasted presents. With over a third (36%) of workers having received a ‘bad’ Secret Santa gift, this is perhaps unsurprising, especially when gifts reported include a used candle, washing-up gloves, a piece of string, mouldy Turkish Delight, mayonnaise, and an already- open bag of sweets! Does this mean Secret Santa should be sacked? Not necessarily, with UK Money Bloggers wrapping up its findings with a heartwarming suggestion to avoid potential waste, with each colleague choosing a charity to donate to on someone else’s behalf instead. A proper password Staff are often warned to ensure their passwords are strong at work, prompted to change them frequently, and use a mishmash of all sorts of letters, numbers and symbols. Yet, somehow, the most basic of passwords are still being chosen, with the most common and easily infiltrated passwords of 2023 now being revealed by the Cybernews Investigation Team. Frazer hopes yours does not appear on the list! Are you using 12345, 123456, 12345678, 123456789, 1234567890 or 111111? Then your password is amongst the common. The same goes if you are choosing qwerty, qwerty123, 1q2w3e, or the dreaded password of ‘password’. In uncovering the passwords, the Cybernews Investigation Team discovered trends in the way people create them, utilising their favourite sports teams, cities, food, and even swear words. What Frazer finds more interesting though is the ease of deducing information about the person from their password, such as numbers illustrating age/birth year, with 1987 and 1991 amongst the most popular. Despite recommendations of using unique passwords, as well as features such as two-factor authentication, weak codes continue to be used that a beginner cybercriminal could hack quickly. Digital Overlord Job titles are often straightforward — essentially acting as a short description of your role. But sometimes businesses get a little, let’s say, over- creative in trying to make their employees’ titles stand out. With the rise of social media, it is becoming more common to see these unorthodox job titles day to day, with a new list compiled by IntaPeople sharing some of the most bizarre of these found on LinkedIn. Would you accept a connection request from a ‘Digital Overlord’? How about a ‘Creator of Happiness’ or ‘Retail Jedi’? Or would you follow up after receiving a business card from a ‘Wizard of Light Bulb Moments’, ‘Dream Alchemist’ or ‘Chief Chatter’? While offering an opportunity for a company to give more personality to their business, firms must be careful their employees don’t become a red flag to the people they are trying to connect with. While Frazer loves the idea of being ‘Chief Biscuit Dunker’ (yes this is a role that has appeared on LinkedIn), he’s not sure how introducing himself as such at his next networking event would be perceived. © stock.adobe.com/ Vitalii Vodolazskyi © stock.adobe.com/ bongkarn © stock.adobe.com/ Romario IenArmstrong house Armstrong House, Armstrong Street, Grimsby, North East Lincolnshire DN31 2QE Tel: (01472) 310301 Email: s.fisher@blmgroup.co.uk Superb Location - - Close to the ports of Grimsby & Immingham - Great motorway links - Close to the town centre Secure off street parking High speed internet availability A range of affordable office sizes 3 3 3 3 Last remaining office suites Prime location in Grimsby Offering a prime position in Grimsby, Armstrong House on Armstrong Street is ideally located.
